☀️📒💛☀️ It’s that time of year agai ☀️📒💛☀️
It’s that time of year again… when I send off my sweet students 🥹
Off & into summer, laden with a goody bag that I hope might keep them reading and writing on trips and between camps.
🏕 ✈️ 🛝

Will they inspire these curious and bright learners who work extra hard to read & write during their school break? Maybe. 😁 Always worth a try!
✍🏻 📕 ✍🏻
This year 5th grade grads receive custom bookmarks - that hopefully might mark a spot in a good book. 🔖

And all kiddos receive a notebook 📒 to match their interest or personality. 🤞

Frixion erasable pens and invisible ink detective pens.
🖊 ✍🏻 ✏️
Plus stickers, gum & snacks to survive of course.

Mainly I hope they will enjoy, play, and be well.

Happy end of school to learners and instructors! You deserve a break.

Funny 🐰 bunny. Learning new skills with Procre Funny 🐰 bunny.

Learning new skills with Procreate. (I have a lot to learn…!)

Why?
- To try things that interest my students; Procreate is a great art program for my learners
- To develop my art skills to create mini books for my learners
- For fun!

This is a draw-along with @beejaydel - thank you!

📖 &🧋 Ok. Here we go… new book and new bob 📖 &🧋
Ok. Here we go… new book and new boba for month of April!

Many great themes in April but one thing all my students love: animals and nature - well, guess that’s 2 things … but it’s for one of my monthly themes - The Earth (Earth Day and National Wildlife Week).

👉The monthly themes provide rich, memorable content to keep my kids curious while I inject that structured literacy goodness.

Earth offers a good opportunity to talk about sounds of “ea” - with this team, we got:

👂🏻 Ea as in eat and ear (long sound and 1st choice when don’t know)

👥 ea with a short (!) sound as in head — not as common - short is usually a closed syllable so it’s a fun exception that’s common enough that it’s worth mentioning…

And the vowel team/r-controlled mashup:
🌎 ‘ear’ as in earth
🐻’ear’ as in Bear

Let the word sorting fun begin!

Did I miss any other ea gems that are worth it? (Not doing the long a like great by choice…)

{Note: this mixup of EA team sounds is for learners who are at a level that they’re ready to hold different choices for decoding and spelling.}

📕 The book: offers great chapter subjects, mini segments that can interest all types of learners with bios, fun facts, interactive activities, and inspiring make-change-in-the-world suggestions. And beautiful design and illustration.
A book gem 💎 that has already captured the interest of my multi-age students.

“The Wide World Handbook: Creatures”

—-
🧋 And I boldly tried a new Boba… That comes with a burnt top and a tiny shovel… crème brûlée.
Does it sound good to you? Or..not?
I’d say it was a treat.

Happy April!

Ready for reading, writing, rhyming, and movement-based fun in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day.
🍀👀🍀
My elementary students have come to expect a scavenger hunt of sorts for every holiday. It’s amazing how much more writing & reading practice they can stretch into when it’s part of an interactive and imaginative play activity. I make it up every time - so hopefully it will all work out.
🌈🌟
Gold pieces and rainbow parts are spread about my yard…they better find them all. 😆

Happy St Patrick’s Day! 🇮🇪

Happy Birthday to Einstein. 💚 I love how this Happy Birthday to Einstein.

💚 I love how this quote reminds us to value the power of imagination even over knowledge. From Einstein - an icon of knowledge and genius!
Perhaps the genius is really in the imagination parts of the mind…

🤔
How do we “teach” imagination? 💡What if the education goals for our learners were imagination-centered? ⭐️
How can we help promote and value wonder, ideas, and a wandering, creative mind? 💭

Any Wordlers out there? It may not be surprising Any Wordlers out there?

It may not be surprising that for someone who teaches structured literacy - this game is really appealing. Orton Gillingham folks - do you Wordle?

And our learners can learn a lot from trying it too! It gives a workout to their spelling brain.

Parents and teachers who Wordle may want to try it alongside their learners to talk about letter choices and patterns.

Combining a puzzle element helps gives motivation to spelling thinking - and this offers a 'zing' when there is success. The key is to help them find their way to the success moment, while still letting it be their moment.

Anyone trying it with their kids or students?

I have done modified versions with clear sleeves and a white board pen, cueing a specific phonics lesson to scaffold the thinking. I am still figuring out how to hook my students into it more deeply - so curious if others are thinking about the same.

Happy Wordling!

Here is an article from Professor Nell Duke at UMichigan breaking down its value (in linktree also):

Um - fidget and gum crazy? Guilty!
🙋🏼‍♀️
[judgment free zone please!😆]

They are colorful, engaging, and somehow relaxing - who can resist?
🌈 🧲 😌
These are not for me exactly… rather- for my students. And what benefits my students, benefits me with their instruction.

Many of my students find that these ease their struggle as they take on difficult learning and try to hold their attention and regulate frustration.

I honor their hard work and want to give them any simple tool I can that will help them move forward with greater comfort.

And Students aren’t presented with all of these at once - I make a choice before their arrival to leave one on the table within reach. And I take their requests if they self-advocate for a fave.

These tools have become essential during learning or to motivate breaks.

You can read more about my tips and experiences with these at the blog post in my linktree.

❄️ A cozy book for snowy, wintry days!!
🦔 🦔🦔🦔

In addition to curling up for a great read with luscious drawings…
Instructionally great for:
- compound words
- consonant-le (count back 3) words
- hibernation discussion
- memory practice as the beautiful structure is the book works in and back out
- prediction with the darling images that preview what’s to come.

With it getting dark early - I even read by flashlight with my learners.

I’m a Jan Brett super fan and love the rich reading experience (would request a change in font for ease for emerging readers…).

These books have something to offer a range of ages again and again!

Boba and Book-buying habit strikes again… 🧋 📚

Having read about this one on “The New York Times” list of Best Illustrated Children’s Books…

And knowing how my learners grapple to wrap their visual brains around the concept of time…
🕰 🗓
…I could not resist seeking this out at my local bookstore.

And - yay! - Books Inc had a copy in-store! 👏🏼

And yay again - I had points for a free boba so was brave and even tried a new order (taro burnt cream something…😋).

So now I look forward to sharing this work-of-art-of a-book, “Time is a Flower” by Julie Morstad with my learners.

It is beautiful and lyrical. The page spread that I show is my favorite, and represents the exact conversation I deliberately have with my learners to create a visual construct for time.
This book will create a nice intro into direct instruction on sequencing time and recognizing their own framework for connecting to it.
